Leaving for New York

Emilie23 October, 2009

Hi there girls!
As some of you have rightly commented, I do have a fantastic job… here I am about to jet off to New York!
I’ll be visiting the set of our photo campaigns and I’m all in a tizz! I hope I won’t be asked to fix the clothes on the models or anything like that – I’m just supposed to be there for logistic support. I wouldn’t like to have the kind of accident our boss (the head of the PR and Communication dept., of course) had years back, and which has become a legend in our office: she was fixing a dress on Cindy Crawford, and – wait for it – she stuck a safety pin into her!! Help! Must stay away from safety pins and other sharp objects. So far all I’ve done is assist the team that’s doing the photo shoots for our advertising campaigns, which are taking place at the moment (and they’re not the only ones – all the other fashion houses are busy with theirs too, and that’s where it all gets complicated – I’ll explain better in a minute).

First of all, our style office, the stylist and the art director (every brand has its own) select the most striking looks for the season, the ones that’ll be the icons of our spring-summer collection. Once the dresses and coats have been rounded up (if it’s for the winter, but we’re talking the spring/summer collection here, so just trenches…), it’s time to look for the creative team for the photo shoots: the photographer, the stylist, the make-up artist, the hairdresser, the manicurist – all those that will help create the  MaxMara and Sportmax image for spring/summer 2010. And then of course there’s the model. I’ve been to all the fashion shows (not just in Milan, but in New York, London and Paris too) in search of a new face: we like to find girls who’ve got that je ne sais quoi, what it takes to become a top model. And I must say we’ve got quite a talent for it. I myself look at websites dedicated to models (supermodels.nl and models.com) to get a few ideas: there are rankings on the sites, with new faces highlighted.

Once we’ve found all the people we need comes the – by no means easy – task of setting a date for the shoot: since all the fashion houses do their shoots at the same time, its really hard work finding a day on which everyone’s free. This is why we usually do the shoots in New York: lots of photographers live there, so it’s easier to get hold of them. We usually shoot in a studio, because we’ve got no control over the weather (the rain…), and we can’t run the risk of having to put the session off, after we’ve worked miracles to get everyone together.
So I’m off to New York…and I’ll get to see Jack (my boyfriend), who lives there. I’m soooo happy and excited.
In my next posts I might just have a shop or two or a trendy place to recommend!
But don’t forget to write!
