Warren says I’m an angel.
That may well be, but hey, I have my dark side too, and my weakness is : crime stories.
I go through at least two a week, in the silent company of Ellery (who, of course, the minute I open a book leaps up into my lap, as if he wants to read along with me), or sometimes I delve into them on the tram on my way to the office. I like a bit of a dark setting, where private eyes lead eccentric, dangerous lives, and the mental contortions you have to tie yourself up in to work out who the culprit was. I find them liberating! Too much glamour can dull the mind, and I need a shot of adrenalin now and then.
Anyway, if I had to name one writer, my favourite at the moment is Lilian Jackson Brown, because her private investigator, the journalist Qwilleran, has two Siamese cats possessed of an extraordinary intuition that miaow their way to the solution. The fun starts right from the moment I have to choose a title in the bookshop, because cats feature in all of them: there’s the Cat who went into the closet (mine does it all the time), or The cat who went to the cinema (I’ve never taken him there) or the Cat who talked turkey at parties.
Now there’s an idea: I could take Ellery to the next fashion event that’s coming up – I bet he’s have fun having a go at the stiletto heels of a few of the fashionistas there.
Time to go and solve another big problem: what can I get Jack the Illustrator (my boyfriend) for Christmas?
